Being Jason Wilson

I am a writer suffering from a constant wanderlust. I grew up in Woodstock, New Brunswick surrounded by books and stories.
Between high school and eventually enrolling in journalism at St. Thomas University in Fredericton, I completed a year-long film program at the University of New Brunswick.
A screenplay from that year has been turned into an idea for a novel. I am a third of the way through writing it with Isaac Thompson, a musician and playwright from Halifax.
Through journalism school and work at the Carleton FreePress newspaper in Woodstock, New Brunswick I have polished my skills. I have shown versatility reporting on straight news, music, arts and sports. Telling an interesting story is what counts, hence why I have not included stories about local town council meetings in the greater Woodstock area.
I write stories and host radio. At CHSR FM, a community radio station in Fredericton, I hosted a late-night open format radio program called “Unfiltered Smoke”. We talked about everything. The topics varied from film to politics to an issue dedicated to prolific serial killers after I had seen the film “Zodiac” that morning. The show changed to “Unfiltered Sports” in the second year and won Best New Show at the annual Barry Awards.
Hunter S. Thompson is my greatest inspiration in journalism though I have no intention to try and replicate his style. He engaged his audience and provided a new way at looking at the world. That is what I want to do.
The future of the media is online and we as budding reporters need to embrace the internet and find a way to make it work. The only way to do that is through mixed media. My ultimate goal is to create an online network for writers, filmmakers, musicians and artists of all ilks. Creativity is our lifeblood and I want to champion it as best I can.
Cheers,
Jason
